Every now and then, I like to dabble in a bit of short story writing – so far it seems, those of a ghostly nature. Perhaps it’s the fact that so much time spent in the natural world naturally leads to a curious intrigue in tales of the supernatural, but whatever the reason I’m a sucker for the chill provided by a ghost story or a bit of folk horror. I’m particularly indebted to the master of the ghost story, the 19th century Cambridge scholar M.R. James, whose formula of the trope is unrivalled.
